ND is proud to present a two-night celebration of Austin’s first Alternative / indie radio station. KNNC 107.7 (aka K-NACK) signed onto the airwaves on Halloween night in 1991 – after four days of on-air stunts including one day which consisted of nothing but The Cure – featuring a format unlike anything to hit Austin’s commercial airwaves before, or since. Back in the day, before the dawn of the internet, K-NACK was one of the only places one could discover and hear what was on the cutting edge of the industry, what we used to refer to as “college rock,” and what is most likely on many playlists in your iTunes as you read this post.
In addition to bringing new music to Austin’s ears, K-NACK wrapped its arms around the local music scene, producing concert events featuring local acts, issuing iconic local music compilation CDs, and — most importantly — actually playing local Austin indie rock bands on commercial radio. Keep in mind — this was in a period of time when local bands had very limited avenues to get their music out. In K-NACK’s heyday, “filesharing” or “social networking” just meant trading self-pressed 7″ singles or cassette tapes for a Shiner Bock at the bar. Radio play was a precious commodity, and K-NACK had the back of the Austin music scene.
Over its six-plus years on the air, K-NACK left a mark on this live music community and showed us all a thing or two. The infamous “Psychobaby” has now turned twenty, and we invite you to come to the party.
Check out the stellar lineup of bands who rocked us during K-NACK’s heyday including Sixteen Deluxe, Sincola, bo bud Greene, Seed, Wannabes, bug / Splinter and Gomez (TX). These bands had a huge influence on Austin’s indie pop / rock scene. Some of them are still blowing minds on a regular basis, and a few of these bands will be performing together for the first time in a decade. It is a kickass lineup, both nights, don’t sleep on it.
K-NACK’s Ray “Raydog” Seggern will serve as your host and an incredible list of on-air talent and staffers will be in the house. Don’t miss the “Class Reunion” kicking off Saturday night. And throughout the weekend, expect loads of K-NACK multimedia, old skool memorabilia, and many, many surprises.
K-NACK swag featuring the legendary Psychobaby logo will be for sale, plus rare compilation CD’s, and more.
If you were there back in the day, you know. If you weren’t, consider this your personal invitation to come the party and get a taste of what helped show Austin the way .
